Overlake Adds Latest Generation MRI Scanner to Medical Imaging Department

Bellevue, Wash. – Overlake Hospital Medical Center recently acquired a second magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner for its medical imaging department. The new MRI, a GE 750 3T, is one of the most powerful MRI scanners available as well as one of the most technologically advanced.

In January 2010, Overlake opened its new MRI suites with the introduction of the Toshiba Titan 1.5T wide bore scanner. With the addition of the new 3T scanner, Overlake's medical imaging department offers patients access to some of the most advanced MRI equipment available in the Puget Sound area. Overlake has invested a total of $6 million in the new MRI imaging suites.

"This new scanner completes the build out of our inpatient MRI suites adjacent to our Emergency & Trauma Center," said Brenda Rinehart, Overlake director of medical imaging. "We're proud to offer patients and referring physicians convenient access to the most comprehensive range of imaging studies, seven days a week."

MRI scanners are categorized by the strength of their magnetic fields which are expressed in tesla (T) units. MRI signal strength is crucial to scanner functionality and the superior signal strength associated with 3T magnets allows these scanners to produce higher resolution images than those that can be obtained from magnets of lesser strength.

Because MRI scans don't expose patients to radiation, physicians often choose MRI imaging for their patients. MRI is frequently used to acquire high quality images of organs and soft tissue and is often preferred for neurological, orthopedic and spinal disc imaging. The highly detailed images from a 3T scanner are also favored by referring physicians for complex diagnoses of certain conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS) because the ability to detect the smallest of lesions is increased dramatically.
