Overlake Medical Center Receives Two Prestigious Awards
Awards recognize Overlake’s excellence in patient safety and care for stroke patients

Bellevue, Wash. May 9, 2013 – Overlake Medical Center received two distinguished awards from both the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award and a Hospital Safety ScoreSM ‘A’ rating by The Leapfrog Group. The award from the American Heart Association recognizes Overlake’s commitment and success in implementing excellent care for stroke patients while the Hospital Safety ScoreSM ‘A’ letter grade by The Leapfrog Group reflects how safe Overlake is for patients.

According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is one of the leading causes of death and serious, long-term disability in the United States.  On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.

To receive the American Heart Association’s award, Overlake achieved a 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality Achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month intervals and achieved 75 percent or higher compliance with six of 10 Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality Measures, which are reporting initiatives to measure quality of care.  

Overlake Medical Center received The Leapfrog Group’s Hospital Safety ScoreSM ‘A’ grade by demonstrating a remarkable ability in ensuring patient safety. The Hospital Safety Score is an A, B, C, D or F letter grade reflecting how safe hospitals are for patients. The score is used to help empower patients to make informed decisions about the safety of their hospital care.

Every year more than 180,000 deaths occur as a result of hospital errors. The goal of the Hospital Safety ScoreSM is to reduce this number by giving prospective patients adequate resources to make informed decisions on what hospital they should visit when seeking care.
