Radiation Oncology

Overview

The Radiation Oncology Department provides compassionate and superior quality care to all types of cancer patients. We provide standard external beam therapy, 3-D conformal therapy, Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), High-Dose Rate Brachytherapy and accelerated partial breast irradiation with Mammosite® and Contura™. For patient treatment we utilize two Varian 21EX linear accelerators (one of which is retrofitted with On-Board Imaging and Electronic Portal Imaging) and one Varian Acuity machine with an HDR after-loader for brachytherapy. We also use a GE 16-slice, wide bore CT scanner for simulation planning. We use the Philips ADAC Treatment Planning system. We average 40 patients per day on active treatment.

Staff Details

Radiation Oncology has worked hard to maintain 100 percent patient satisfaction scores for the last 11 months. The environment is very warm and caring and our dedicated staff exemplify service excellence.

We develop strong relationships with our patients who come in for daily treatment for up to six weeks per course of therapy. This gives us an opportunity to get to know our patients and have a positive impact on their cancer treatment journey.

Work Hours/Shifts

Radiation Oncology is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. We are closed on weekends, except to treat emergency cases.

Student Programs

Radiation Oncology is a clinical rotation site for Radiation Therapy students at Bellevue College.

Career Paths

We have two levels of Radiation Therapists at Overlake. RTT – Level 1, provides basic radiation therapy. RTT – Level 2, provides basic radiation therapy as well as CT simulations, IGRT and brachytherapy, including Mammosite® and Contura™.

We have a training program for Radiation Therapists interested in Dosimetry training. This on-the-job training program is very limited and is based on department need. Upon completion of the training, the trainee is eligible to sit for the Certified Medical Dosimetrist (CMD) board exam.
