Evidence supports short-term and goal directed treatment models as an effective approach to fast and sustainable relief of anxiety and mood symptoms.
A little about short-term psychotherapy:
Typical duration is 3-6 months with weekly or bi-weekly sessions
It uses a practical, highly active, and supportive approach
Emphasizes addressing one or two core problems in the here and now
Leverages and reinforces the patient's strengths to achieve change
Creates momentum by adopting a therapeutically optimistic stance, refraining from excessive focus on the past
Utilizes homework to practice concepts discussed in session
Types of Short-term psychotherapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):
CBT is the most comprehensively studied psychotherapy and is the first choice for anxiety disorders
Focuses on the here and now by examining assumptions and beliefs, and challenges and tests them
Based on a cognitive model, examining how thoughts, emotions, and behaviors intersect to determine emotional and behavioral reactions to stressful life events
Interpersonal therapy (IPT):
Connects mood symptoms to unhealthy communication styles and patterns
Focuses on interpersonal factors that perpetuate depression
Helps patients to communicate their interpersonal needs and emotions more effectively through assertiveness training and healthy boundary setting
Solution-focused therapy (SFT):
Focuses on what the patient wants to achieve through therapy rather than on the problems that made the person seek help
Does not focus on the past, but on the present and future
Focuses on the patient's strengths and resources
