My practice philosophy is driven by my own experiences as a patient and as the family member of a patient. Regardless of how invincible any of us might seem at times, when we become a patient, we are at our most vulnerable and sometimes unable to advocate for ourselves.
As a surgeon, my first aim is to make my patients feel seen. As I become a part of their healing journey, I become a guide, an advocate and a technician. Whether my job involves giggling through an embarrassing hemorrhoid exam or courageously confronting a new cancer diagnosis, I consider my professional responsibility both a privilege and an obligation. I will offer my patients both the best of my humanity and the best of medical science. In every case, I aim to help patients with the least invasive, most effective treatment method available.
In my spare time, I enjoy endurance running and yoga, writing poetry and creative prose, and reading thoughtful nonfiction. My best recent recommendation is “Disturbing the Universe” by Freeman Dyson. I am married to a state judge advocate and lieutenant colonel in the Montana Army National Guard, and four of my eight stepchildren are officers or cadets in the U.S. military. Our live-in dependents include Heathcliff the Russian blue cat and Betty White our golden (girl) retriever.
