Convalescent Plasma Expanded Access
Objective
Due to the lack of proven treatment options for COVID-19, the only medical intervention currently available to patients who develop severe illness is supportive care. Developing and researching potential treatments in an expedited fashion is a priority in combating this disease. Through collaboration with BloodWorks Northwest, the Mayo Clinic has developed a compassionate use research program that provides patients with severe illness access to investigational convalescent plasma donated by individuals who have recovered from the illness. An individual’s immune system often produces antibodies when exposed to a virus. These antibodies may offer protective benefits if the person is exposed to the virus again in the future. In this research program, individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 donate their plasma, along with the antibodies that it may contain, to patients currently hospitalized with severe or life-threatening illness. Transfusion of antibodies to these patients may improve clinical outcomes and prevent further disease progression.
