Overlake psychiatrists Juan (Antonio) Avila, MD, and Richard Geary, MD, spoke with KOMO News about their tips for dealing with addiction during the holidays.

From the story: “Families planning a party can ask their loved one with addiction whether it might be better to hold it without alcohol, and if that’s the case, the celebration will be just as enjoyable,” Geary said. “Spending wonderful time together is what’s important.”

“If their families aren’t able to commit to an alcohol- or cannabis-free party, they can say, ‘I love you and I really wish I could come, but for my health, I don’t think I will be able to do it,'” Avila said. “For these people, looking for opportunities to spend holiday time with understanding friends could be a wiser choice.”
