- From two different angles (rather than just a single view) so doctors can better see very small arteries and blood vessels.
- Uses 75% less radiation than other tools.
Biplane imaging isn't just used to diagnose brain conditions. It also guides minimally invasive procedures that treat life-threatening conditions, including:
- Treating brain aneurysms (weak spots in blood vessel walls that can rupture and cause life-threatening bleeding). Biplane imaging can help doctors seal the aneurysm from inside the blood vessel and prevent future bleeding more precisely and efficiently.
- Removing clots and restoring blood flow after a stroke. Doctors can more quickly reach and open up a blocked artery using biplane imaging.
In some cases, removing a clot and restoring blood flow to the brain can reverse stroke symptoms — if patients are treated within 24 hours. This is a huge advancement because many people who have strokes experience long-term difficulties with moving, speaking and thinking.
“I just treated a patient who came to the ER unable to speak with one-sided weakness,” Dr. Khan says. “We successfully removed the clot which reversed the weakness and restored speech. Now, that patient is back to all their normal activities.”
