Giving Tuesday Kicks Off Holiday Season

print page Print

We all know that Black Friday jump-starts the holiday shopping season, but increasingly it’s Giving Tuesday that ushers in the season of caring. Now in its sixth year, the event on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving has inspired an avalanche of philanthropy. Last year, Giving Tuesday gifts totaled $177 million across 98 countries. The average online gift was $107.

This year, Giving Tuesday falls on November 28. To join the movement to make the holidays a season of caring, not just shopping, consider a gift to support outstanding health care in your community. If just 50 people visit and give $100 or more, your caring gifts will add up to over $5,000. That might mean:

  • Enough “preemie”-sized diapers for the tiny babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for 1 ½ years.
  • 35 new wheelchairs for the hospital.
  • 6 new mattresses to freshen patient rooms.
  • Enough lenses to perform laser cataract surgery and help 14 people see more clearly.
  • 18 IV poles to deliver critical medications to our patients.

Gratitude

We asked Overlake staff what they are thankful for this season:

  • “I’m thankful for the uncompensated care we are able to provide, because no one should have to worry about getting the health care they need.”
  • “I am so thankful for the great care that Overlake provided for my family during my mom’s illness. Her doctor even stopped by to chat and bring her books. The docs really do care.”
  • “I am grateful for the ladies who got together and raised money to build this hospital back in the 1950’s!”
  • “I really appreciate the supportive work environment here. My coworkers always have my back.”
  • “The executives at Overlake are approachable and available, not only to staff but also to patients and community members.”
  • “More than anything, I think we all appreciate the people who live and work on the Eastside and make this such a great community to be a part of. Thank you all.”
