School to Healthcare Career
How do you get started on a healthcare career? Sometimes, the gap between school and the workplace is hard to bridge. And for some individuals, the training they need is out of reach due to financial or other constraints. At the same time, healthcare organizations like Overlake need skilled and dedicated workers. Our mission of Compassionate care for every life we touch is achieved by the outstanding people who work here. With the help of our generous donors, we ensure that all of our caregivers are trained and ready to provide the exceptional care for which we are known.
Donor-supported programs helping start or advance healthcare careers at Overlake:

- Nurse Residency: When new nurse graduates join Overlake, they participate in a 12-month program that is based on best practices and evidence-based nursing education and training. Providing novice nurses with the learning, mentorship, and support they need is critical to their success as Overlake care team members, and it ensures that they are ready and confident to provide high-quality patient care.
- Medical Assistant Apprenticeship: This statewide initiative addresses the critical need for trained, certified and highly skilled medical assistants (MAs) at Overlake’s hospital and clinics — roles that are essential, yet historically difficult to fill. Traditional MA training programs often require individuals to pay tuition and forgo income while studying, creating a significant barrier for many aspiring healthcare professionals. Overlake’s MA Apprenticeship Program tackles these challenges by offering paid, on-the-job training that complements their coursework. After completing the program, participants take a certification exam to join Overlake’s staff.
- Certified Nursing Assistant Training Program: Patient care technicians (PCTs) support nurses by helping with tasks like checking vital signs, assisting patients with daily needs and offering emotional support. To become a PCT, individuals must first become certified nursing assistants (CNAs), which can be costly and time-consuming. To make this path more accessible, Overlake offers a CNA training program. After completing combined classroom and on-the-job experience, participants can take the CNA exam and apply for PCT roles at Overlake.
Community Support in Action
These innovative programs are possible because of the generosity and vision of our community. By supporting these initiatives, donors help remove barriers to healthcare careers and open doors for local residents. This investment not only strengthens Overlake’s workforce but also empowers individuals to build meaningful careers in healthcare. Together, we’re creating a stronger, healthier community — one opportunity at a time.
