When to Consider Referral

  • The patient is age 18 or older and voluntarily seeking treatment.
  • Symptoms are not adequately managed with a typical outpatient treatment plan.
  • The patient needs rapid, comprehensive assessment and short-term stabilization.
  • The patient may be stepping down from inpatient psychiatric care or intensifying outpatient treatment to prevent hospitalization.
  • The patient can safely participate in a structured group program and return home outside program hours.
  • The patient has an adequate support system to maintain stability during non-program hours.
  • The psychiatric condition is expected to respond to short-term therapy and medical interventions.

Frequently Asked Questions for Referring Providers

What are not appropriate diagnoses or conditions to refer?
We cannot admit patients on the sole basis of a trauma disorder, personality disorder, OCD, anxiety disorder, eating disorder, ADHD, ASD, or substance use disorder. Our scope of practice is to stabilize acute manifestations of depression, mania, and/or psychosis.

Is this an inpatient program?
No. The program is outpatient day treatment. Patients attend programming during the day and return home afterward.

Is individual therapy offered?
Treatment is primarily group-based, with psychiatric provider involvement and clinical mental health therapist support. Individual therapy can be offered when clinically indicated as an adjunct to the program.

Is medication management included?
Yes. Medication management and check-ins are led by the psychiatric provider, with symptom monitoring, education, and coordination with outpatient providers when appropriate.

Can patients step down from inpatient care?
Yes. The program may be appropriate for patients transitioning from a more structured level of care or strengthening outpatient treatment to prevent hospitalization.

What should I tell patients to expect?
Patients should expect a short-term, structured, group-based day program focused on stabilization, coping skills, medication management, life balance, interpersonal skills, and transition planning.
