Bariatric Surgery FAQs
Weight Loss Surgery: Frequently Asked Questions
Eligibility & Treatment Options
Am I a candidate for weight loss surgery?
Weight loss surgery may be an option if you have obesity and have struggled to lose weight or keep it off through diet, exercise or medications alone. Eligibility is based on factors such as your body mass index (BMI), overall health and any weight-related medical conditions. A consultation with a bariatric specialist can help determine the best treatment plan for you.
What types of weight loss surgery are available?
The most common procedures are sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass surgery. Each works differently and offers unique benefits. Your surgeon will discuss your options and recommend the procedure that best fits your health history, weight-loss goals and lifestyle.
What role do weight loss medications play?
For some people, weight loss medications can be an effective treatment option. They may be used before surgery, after surgery or instead of surgery. Your care team can help determine whether medication, surgery or a combination of both is right for you.
Can I have weight loss surgery if I have had previous orthopedic procedures, such as a hip replacement or spinal fusion?
In many cases, yes. Having a previous orthopedic procedure does not automatically prevent you from having weight loss surgery. Your bariatric team will review your medical history and work with you to determine the safest approach.
Are there health conditions that could prevent me from having weight loss surgery?
Some medical conditions may increase the risks associated with surgery. Before recommending treatment, your care team will perform a thorough evaluation to make sure surgery is a safe option for you.
Surgery & Recovery
Is weight loss surgery safe?
Weight loss surgery is considered a safe and effective treatment when performed by an experienced bariatric team. Like any surgery, there are risks but advances in minimally invasive techniques have helped make procedures safer and recovery faster.
How long does recovery take?
Recovery varies from person to person, but many patients return to their normal daily activities within a few weeks. Your care team will provide personalized guidance based on your procedure and overall health.
Will I need to follow a special diet after surgery?
Yes. After surgery, you'll gradually progress from liquids to soft foods and eventually to solid foods. Following your nutrition plan and building healthy eating habits are important for long-term success.
What is dumping syndrome?
Dumping syndrome can occur after certain weight loss surgeries when foods or drinks high in sugar move too quickly through the digestive system. Symptoms may include nausea, sweating, flushing, abdominal cramping, diarrhea, dizziness or fatigue.
Will I need to take vitamins after surgery?
Most patients need to take vitamins and supplements for life after bariatric surgery. Regular follow-up appointments and lab tests help ensure your body is getting the nutrients it needs.
Results & Benefits
How much weight can I expect to lose after surgery?
Weight loss results vary based on the procedure and the individual. Most patients lose a significant amount of weight during the first 12 to 18 months after surgery, especially when they follow healthy eating habits, stay active and attend follow-up appointments.
Can weight loss surgery help with diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnea?
Yes. Many patients see significant improvement in obesity-related conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and joint pain.
Will I still be able to exercise after surgery?
Absolutely. In fact, many patients find exercise easier after losing weight. Improved mobility, less joint pain and increased energy often make physical activity more comfortable and enjoyable.
Is weight loss surgery only about losing weight?
No. Weight loss surgery is about improving your overall health and quality of life. In addition to weight loss, many patients experience more energy, better mobility and a lower risk of obesity-related diseases.
Do people ever regret having weight loss surgery?
Most patients are happy with their decision and often say they wish they had pursued treatment sooner. Having realistic expectations and staying connected with your care team can help support long-term success.
Insurance & Support
Will insurance cover weight loss surgery?
Many insurance plans cover bariatric surgery if certain medical requirements are met. Coverage varies by insurance plans, and your bariatric team can help verify your benefits and explain the approval process.
What support is available after surgery?
You won't be on this journey alone. Ongoing support may include follow-up visits, nutrition counseling, educational resources and support groups. Staying connected with your care team can help you build healthy habits and maintain your results for years to come.
