When people think about cancer treatment, they often think about surgery, chemotherapy or radiation. But cancer can affect much more than a person’s physical health. It can impact emotional well-being, family life, finances and overall quality of life.

During a recent New Day NW segment, Nicholas Serrano, MD, radiation oncologist and regional medical director of cancer services at Overlake, spoke about the importance of supportive care and how Overlake supports patients from diagnosis through treatment and into survivorship.

At Overlake Cancer Center, a team of nurse navigators, social workers, financial counselors and other specialists works alongside each patient’s medical team to help address the physical, emotional and practical challenges that can come with cancer. Support may include nutrition counseling, physical therapy, mental health counseling, genetic counseling, spiritual care, palliative care and more. Nurse navigators also help coordinate care, answer questions and connect patients with resources.

Because every cancer journey is different, supportive care is personalized to each patient’s needs — and it evolves as those needs change. Even after treatment ends, survivorship services can help patients manage long-term effects, regain strength and return to the activities that matter most.

At Overlake, the goal is to make sure patients and their families feel supported throughout every step of their cancer journey.
