7 Tips for a Safe Halloween

Spotting the cleverest costumes, seeking out the spookiest haunted houses, and, of course, counting and sorting the candy—Halloween can be an extremely fun and enjoyable holiday, for kids and adults alike. But what’s not fun is getting sick or injured. Overlake urgent care physicians, Bryce Munson, DO and Eunjoo Yoo, MD, shared that they typically don’t see unusual Halloween-related illnesses or injuries; just the run-of-the-mill ankle sprains due to trick-or-treating mishaps and stomach upsets from sugar overload.

To avoid these and other potential dangers, Drs. Munson and Yoo offer seven tips for enjoying a safe Halloween:

  1. Use the buddy system.
  2. Wear a jacket.  
  3. Carry a flashlight and stick to the sidewalks.
  4. Avoid wearing costumes that are too long—they can be a tripping hazard for you and others.
  5. Only eat unopened candy, and avoid homemade treats from those you don’t know.
  6. Slow down on the roads.
  7. Don’t drink and drive—if attending a Halloween party, and you plan to drink, also plan for a designated driver or call a rideshare service.
