Bellevue, Wash. – Overlake Medical Center Foundation’s 18th Annual Community Partners Luncheon on November 21 will host the well-known public health innovator Dr. Rishi Manchanda. Dr. Manchanda will share his thoughts on how doctors, nurses and other health care workers should look for the root causes of illness rather than simply treating the symptoms.

Dr. Manchanda has been a practicing physician in South Central Los Angeles for over a decade, and came to the realization that many of his patients’ symptoms were related to social and environmental factors that exist in everyday life. The Upstream movement is teaching clinicians to ask the right questions related to a patient’s living environment as part of the diagnosis process. Rishi is now working with health care providers and communities around the country to improve care and social determinants of health.

In his book, The Upstream Doctors, Manchanda looks at how health begins at home and in the workplace. Manchanda is also the founder of Health Begins, a social network that teaches caregivers and policy makers to examine the living and working conditions that make people sick. He will address how healthcare providers and the community can work together to improve care and the social determinants of health.

Each year more than 600 business and community leaders come together at Overlake’s annual Community Partners Luncheon to celebrate the important role Overlake Medical Center plays in ensuring the health and wellness of the Eastside community. Immediately prior to the luncheon, Overlake will host its 3rd annual Wellness Fair which will showcase how Overlake, Eastside businesses and other community organizations are working to support health and wellness. Participants include Whole Foods, Hopelink, Sound Generations, Eating Recovery Center, YMCA and many more. Proceeds from the luncheon will benefit patients at Overlake by supporting the latest technologies, community outreach programs and high-quality compassionate care.
