Radiation therapy is a crucial treatment option for various types of cancer, but many folks may not understand exactly how it targets and treats cancer cells. 

Nicholas Serrano, MD, is a radiation oncologist at Overlake Cancer Center, who helped explain the methods and technology behind radiation therapy on KING 5 New Day Northwest. 

“There are two general categories of radiation,” said Dr. Serrano. “The majority of patients receive what is called external beam radiation, but there is also an internal radiation that can also be utilized called brachytherapy. For external beam radiation, it’s typically a daily treatment where invisible X-rays are treating the tumor that the radiation oncologist and the team are trying to target.”
