Registered dietitian Amie Louwers with Overlake’s outpatient nutrition services shares the common habits she sees among patients who maintain their independence and enjoy a high quality of life as they age. Use this quick checklist to see which healthy habits are already part of your routine — and which ones you may want to add.

  1. Take a walk every day, even on days when you don’t feel like it.
  2. Include protein at every meal to help maintain muscle and strength.
  3. Spend time outdoors and get some morning sunlight.
  4. Lift weights or do strength training a few times each week. Tips to get started
  5. Fill your plate with colorful fruits and vegetables — and fewer ultra-processed foods.
