Our general surgeons offer the latest procedures, including minimally invasive and robotic surgeries. Our goal is to help you get back to the activities you love as soon as possible.

If you or a loved one needs surgery, our general surgery team is here for you. Our general surgeons perform surgery on many different areas of the body, including the abdomen, digestive system, skin and soft tissues. Many of our surgeons have focused training in certain surgeries or a special interest in specific conditions. Our team has a proven track record of excellent outcomes. Many of our doctors are regularly recognized by Seattle Magazine and Seattle Met Top Docs.

At Overlake Medical Center & Clinics, we’ll work closely with you to develop a care plan that best meets your health needs and goals. This close partnership can help you feel confident that you’re receiving the best care possible.

Conditions We Treat

Our general surgeons treat a wide variety of conditions. Some of the most common ones include:

  • Abdominal pain, trauma and injuries.
  • Appendicitis.
  • Benign and cancerous conditions that affect the intestines.
  • Benign and cancerous soft tissue tumors.
  • Bowel blockages.
  • Gallstones and other gallbladder diseases.
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
  • Inguinal, hiatal, ventral and incisional hernias and other types of hernias.
  • Liver and pancreatic diseases.
  • Skin lesions, tumors and cancers.
  • Trauma requiring surgical management.

General Surgery Treatments and Services

  • Simple and complex hernia repairs.
  • Specialized procedures for GERD that hasn’t improved with other treatments.
  • Gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy) and management of bile disorders.
  • Surgical management of intestinal disease, benign and cancerous, requiring surgery.
  • Removal of benign and soft tissue tumors.
  • Skin lesion and skin cancer removal.

Deep Expertise in Advanced Surgeries

Many of our patients are eligible for advanced surgeries, including:

  • Minimally invasive surgery: Also called laparoscopic surgery or keyhole surgery, this approach uses a long, thin tube with a camera on the end of it and thin instruments, to perform surgery. This approach can be easier on the body, have fewer complications and lead to a faster recovery.
  • Robotic surgery: In this approach, surgeons use a robotic platform to perform surgery. Surgeons use a robotic arm that is more precise than a human hand and has a greater range of motion. Equipped with a camera, the robotic arm also allows the surgeon to see every possible angle. The end result is a highly precise surgery with as little harm to surrounding tissue as possible.

Your surgeon will work with you to decide the best approach for you based on your condition, overall health and other factors. Traditional, open surgery may still be the best option for some people depending on the that type of surgical problem they have.

Experts in Hernia Repair

Overlake is home to general surgeons with specialized training and experience in all types of hernia repair. This includes simple and complex repair for all types of hernias. Most people are eligible for laparoscopic or robotic hernia repair surgery, making their procedure as precise as possible and their recovery as quick as possible.

Advanced Care for Complex GERD

If you or someone you love has GERD that does not get better with medical management, dietary and lifestyle changes, our team can provide expert surgical care. GERD is a digestive disorder that happens when acid from your stomach travels up the tube that connects your stomach to your throat (esophagus).

Surgery to treat GERD is called fundoplication and we often do it robotically. Typically, the surgeon wraps the top of the stomach around the bottom of the esophagus. This makes a new barrier and helps prevent stomach acid from entering the esophagus, decreasing or stopping symptoms. This surgery can also reduce the likelihood of developing Barrett’s esophagus, which can make people more likely to develop esophageal cancer.

A Specialized Team Dedicated to You

We work together with other top specialists to care for every aspect of your health before, during and after surgery. And we do it in a highly personalized, streamlined system where doctors talk to each other, make decisions together and communicate the most important information clearly. In the end, our goal is to make your experience as easy as possible for you and your loved ones.

For example, if you need multiple surgeries, you may be able to have both surgeries at once, reducing the time spent under anesthesia and the time spent recovering. We also have a comprehensive system in place to prepare patients for surgery that involves the operating room staff, anesthesia, primary care providers, cardiology, pulmonology, nutrition, physical therapy and other services. For instance if you take blood thinning medication, you’ll have access to our anticoagulation clinic, to help you understand any changes in medication leading up to surgery and afterwards.
