Finding a Pediatrician or Family Medicine Provider for Your Baby
Choosing a pediatrician or family practice doctor who will take care of your baby in the first few weeks – and beyond – is a big decision. And it’s one that’s best made in advance, when you have some time to choose wisely.
Why? Because you’ll visit your child’s doctor often in the first few months of life. And then, over the next months and years, you’ll continue to build a trusting relationship that ideally becomes a steady source of support, care and advice.
Choosing a Type of Doctor for Your Baby
There are a few types of doctors who care for newborns:
- A pediatrician: Pediatricians are primary care doctors who specialize in the physical, mental, social and emotional health of kids. To become a pediatrician, doctors go to four years of medical school and then spend three years training as pediatric medical residents.
- A family medicine doctor: A family medicine doctor is a primary care provider who may do their residency in a variety of specialties, including pediatrics, internal medicine and gynecology. A family doctor can treat your entire family – so when you and your child are both sick, you can go to the same doctor together.
- A family medicine Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO): A family medicine DO is a doctor trained to provide comprehensive, preventative care to kids and families, with a strong focus on the interconnectedness of physical, emotional and mental health.
Considerations When Choosing a Doctor for Your Baby
- Recommendations from friends. Ask your friends about their experiences with their pediatrician or family doctor – so you can see how well their experience matches your preferences.
- Insurance. It’s important to find out which pediatricians or family doctors are in-network providers. You can filter by “insurance accepted” on our pediatrician provider list or our family medicine provider list. But it’s always a good idea to also call your insurance company and double-check.
- Location, gender of the provider and languages spoken. You can also filter on location, gender and languages spoken on our pediatrician provider list or our family medicine provider list.
- Whether a provider is accepting new patients. Before you get too attached to a certain provider, it’s a good idea to see if they are listed as “accepting new patients.” If not, you can always call and ask to be put on a waiting list.
- Care philosophy. Ask about a provider’s philosophy about care, including vaccinations, circumcision, breastfeeding, sleep and parenting strategies. Then, compare it to your own preferences.
- Ease of communication. Being able to easily contact your provider can be important. Find out about how you can get questions answered quickly – whether that’s by phone, a patient portal or text.
- Group practice and schedule. Find out if a potential provider is part of a group of doctors that cover for each other if one is not available. And find out what kind of care is available after-hours.
Where to Find a Pediatrician or Family Medicine Doctor
If you choose to deliver at Overlake and already have a pediatrician or family medicine doctor who does not see patients at Overlake, we have doctors available to take care of your baby during your stay at our Childbirth Center.
Before you leave the Childbirth Center, we encourage you to schedule your follow-up appointment with a chosen pediatrician or family medicine provider. This is a different provider than the pediatrician who discharges you from the hospital.
Most people come to us for a check-up for both parent and baby two to three days after birth at our Parent & Baby Care Center – and at that visit, we’ll be sure to check that you’ve found a provider for your baby.
If you need help finding a pediatrician or family medicine doctor, we have several locations listed below to choose from.
You can also search for providers by filtering on location (within 5 miles, for example) on our pediatrician provider list or our family medicine provider list.
